Course Description

This course will provide you with an introduction to the theoretical issues in language learning and teaching. It also investigates the development of different approaches and methods in language teaching.

Course Objectives

This course aims at helping the students to gain an overview of the theoretical issues in language learning and teaching and provide them with the opportunity to be familiar with different approaches and methods in language pedagogy.


Course Requirements

1. Active Class Participation and Preparation:

Each student must be well-prepared every session. There may be some unexpected questions or quizzes.

1. Mid-term Exam
2. Final Exam
3. Term Project

Students are required to do a library research on one of the following recommended topics. Any other topic should be approved by the instructor. The topics should be approved not later than the mid-term. Note also that the library research should have at least 15 references.

4. Sociocultural Theory of language learning
5. Classroom Management
6. English for Specific Purposes (ESP)/ English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
7. Strategies-based instruction

10. Needs Analysis

Course Assessment

1. Class participation and discussions 20%
2. Mid-term exam 20%
3. Final exam 45%
4. Term project 15%
